The 2009 event raised over £60 million which will be spent on development projects mostly in Africa but also in the UK. The money is raised through a day of "Be Funny For Money" events and an evening of television comedy, sketches, send ups and skits with the public pledging money online and via the telephone.

Comic Relief is notable for the participation of high profile celebrities all willing to get involved and often send themselves up. The comedians and celebrities who take part are however only one part of a story that seems to really capture the public's imagination. Across the UK all sorts of Comic Relief events take place as people look for ways to "Be Funny For Money". The list of fundraising ideas range from simple charity head shaves, body waxing, beard dyeing, baked bean bath sitting to much more elaborate events. Most schools also take part with many opting for No Uniform Days where the kids dress up in amusing costumes in exchange for a donation etc. My own daughter's small school raised a very laudable £300.00 this way - while also having a lot of fun.

Musing on this made me wonder why certain events will capture people's hearts and bring in the money while others struggle. There is never one simple answer of course. Comic Relief has a lot of resources behind it, and celebrity backing that most non-profits would give their right arms for. However I believe that behind all that are a few very simple things that are relevant to all fundraisers. Ok as fundraisers we are never going to be able to match up to something like Comic Relief. But sometimes it does no harm to analyse the success of something to see what lessons we can learn

Comic Relief offer-

1. A very simple, well articulated message.

2. An inclusiveness - this is cleverly woven in to everything they do. The celebrities and the people working on the street or in their office are all clearly part of a bigger idea and there is little room for ego. Comic Relief have attained the unique position where it is cool to be part of things and it is those not participating who are on the outside.

3. Clear actions to support the appeal that are very easy to do. Buy a fundraising product or ring / click in with a donation.

4.Plenty of enthusiasm. The lifeblood of fundraising.

5.Success - Comic Relief are careful to show where your donations go and the difference they make. Its making a difference that people are buying into.

6. Plenty of fun. Comic Relief actually is funny. The events are great to be involved in. The night of comedy TV will be discussed at work and schools the next day.

I believe that these simple things which work so well for Comic Relief can also help fundraisers working on much smaller scales too. You just need to slow down and take a good hard look at your fundraising ideas and plans. So whether you are planning a simple school fundraiser or a more complicated charity fundraising programme take inspiration from an organisation who do it well. There are lessons here for us all.

Comic Relief - Anxiety & Panic

My husband and I watched a movie over the weekend. "Without a Paddle",
have you seen it?

What's interesting in this movie, is one of the guys is a doctor
and claims to develop a new phobia every day. In one scene he actually
resorts to repeating lines from Star Wars (he is a big star wars fan)
in order to block out thoughts of fear.

Ok ok, so at the time that he was attempting this tactic he was
being chased by a bunch of thugs that wanted to kill him. I would
call that "appropriate anxiety", and "appropriate anxiety" is
built-in to us from birth, it can save your life.

However, there is something to be learnt from the tactic that
he is using to block out the fear he is feeling. He is pushing
the bad thoughts aside and trying to replace them with something
he enjoys (Star Wars).

So next time your feeling the mighty "big fear", try to push those
thoughts aside, and replace those fearful thoughts with something
you "enjoy" thinking about.

I recommend you all get this movie out. Not for the factor of
observing "his" phobias, but simply because it is entertaining
and a barrel full of laughs. Watching comedy movies can very
therapeutic and will take you away from your day to day drudgery
of dealing with anxiety & panic.

In fact, I once heard that a guy cured himself from cancer by watching
comedy movies for 8 hours each day. Think I heard that on one of my
Tony Robbins CD's. There is some food for thought for you ;-)

5 Great Options For Comic Relief on Satellite TV

Everybody needs a laugh now and then, and lately it seems like comic relief is being sought out more and more. When times start going bad, comedy can be a much-needed companion. If you are a satellite TV subscriber and need a laugh at any time, you can take advantage of the numerous options available to you. Whether it be movies, stand-up performances or the original series being offered by the premium networks, you have no excuse for keeping the frown on your face. Check out these five solutions.

1. Bill Maher...But I'm Not Wrong. Mr. Politically Incorrect himself has a whole new slew of topics to explore since he last took center stage on the HBO HD networks. In this brand-new performance taped at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, Maher gets into all the latest action from the American scene, from what he calls 'fake patriotism' to the transgressions of governors from the state just below that of his North Carolina audience. You can be sure that he won't be pulling any punches.

2. The Ricky Gervais Show. You may have become familiar with Ricky Gervais from the original Office or the hit film The Invention of Lying, but there's more on the way from this new force in comedy. Reprising a series of podcasts that had an unbelievable large audience, this animated show features three characters - Gervais and two collaborators - who discuss what is going on inside their strange minds. With Gervais, you can sure a lot of squirming - and a lot of laughter - will be on the menu.

3. Arrested Development. The cast of this series - Michael Cera, Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor - can be found in all of the latest hit movies, but this series had them all gathered together in peak form. It's no wonder that many continue to call this show one of the best comedies to ever hit the airwaves. Though it was cancelled in its prime, satellite TV subscribers can relive the hilarious moments again and again on IFC repeats or utilizing the On-Demand feature.

4. Dr. Strangelove. Strangelove is one those characters etched into the imagination of several generations at this point, and it's a good time to relive this classic film in HD on Turner Classic Movies. Peter Sellers outdid himself, playing three roles, but none is more convincing than the good doctor himself. If the War Room were this much fun in reality, our security would be in less than the safest hands. This hilarious film will brighten up any day - especially when you are tired of the hypocrisy of the times.

5. Curb Your Enthusiasm. Larry David and his dyspeptic crew are out there, reading between the lines and making one another furious yet again. This already classic series has only enhanced the sterling reputation of one of satellite TV's best networks, HBO. Whatever you think about your own personal relationships, you'll find a more dysfunctional version on this show, guaranteed to make you smile.

Comic Relief Compliments of the U.S. Government and Attorney General John Ashcroft

Comic relief compliments of the U.S. government and former attorney general John Ashcroft during the senate congressional hearings and inquisition of corruption throughout the Bush administration.

Funny ...while catching up on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart concerning some hearings with gov't officials...these remarks came from former Attorney General John Ashcroft when he was questioned. Ashcroft replied:

"I must admit that its been difficult for me sometimes to distinguish between what I in fact recall as a matter of my own experience and what I remember from the accounts of others."

"Any statement I did or did not make, or would or would not make in a classified setting, I would not comment on."

"I can't answer a hypothetical about what the President might or might not have done."

"I don't have any recollection of an awareness of that."

"My communications with the President are privileged communications."

"I'm trying to think of all the reasons that are appropriate for met to refuse to answer that question."

What a beautiful thing it is when one is so educated and intellectually clever enough to be evasive, while obstructing the very justice system he was hired to uphold. This certainly gives the American people great confidence in the government and justice department that so quickly penalizes we the people for the smallest infraction, while obstructing justice themselves at the highest level and then denying all wrong doing without hesitation.

There's your comic relief for the day compliments of the U.S. government.

It's sad and unfortunate that the American people cannot even trust the highest judicial office in the land to be straight and forthright with we the people. Is it any wonder America has more criminals and people incarcerated than any nation on earth? We learned from the best, beginning with are governmentally appointed officials.

Corruption in high places filters down and saturates society, making us untrustworthy reprobates seeking merely our own rather than what is good for all.

Comical and pitiful indeed.

Invite worldwide minister Paul F Davis and author to speak in your city! scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='the comic strip'/>
the comic strip

How Charlie Brown Became America's Favorite Comic Strip

Let us know something about Charlie Brown first. Above all, Charlie Brown is the main character of the comic strip Peanuts. It is an original illustration and strip by Charles M. Schulz. I am very thankful with this guy because Peanuts characters are one of my favorite things in life. I grew up with this cartoon, although it's already running as a comic strip long before my existence but I still remember how I have loved watching them in front of the television. Actually, everyone loves the comic strip and it has influenced every household during its time.

What I know about Charlie is that he is a simple American boy. There was no mention of his parents and his only sibling sister is Sally that has a good heart to everyone and takes life easy. His got a pet dog named Snoopy that has a little yellow bird friend called Woodstock. He has plenty of friends however and they are his everyday companions. I remember Charlie Brown as a lovable humble kid, quick to get anxious and need self-confidence. He has lots of hope and vey determined but some kids named him as a loser. His peers take advantage of him but he does not mind this. To sum it up, Charlie Brown is a very good boy. Those are the characteristics that he possesses.

I love the way Charlie give affection to her love interest Marcie who wore eyeglasses, wore t-shirts and shorts, to top it all also love him. She has a tomboy best friend called Peppermint Patty and one of his school friends. I also remember her calling Charlie Brown Chuck. One of the regular characters is Lucy who is a selfish little girl and very bossy to everyone especially to Charlie Brown. She has a little brother called Linus the best friend of Charlie that always brings his security blanket with him and a baby brother Rerun who is the youngest character. How I love when Lucy gives attention to her love interest Schroeder who is always playing the piano. There are more characters in Peanuts cartoons that I think was the portrayal of the behaviors of every American kid.

It became so popular during his time because of the common characterization of Charlie and his friends. They are the models of all the personalities you will notice in every kid. You will see different emotions and unconsciously agreeing to all of their representations. The famous character you will see in Charlie Brown is his being neurotic. He is very prone to despair and worry, constantly anxious in anything. All of these and some other things have become the funny stuff during that time.

Charlie Brown has become popular because of their famous characterization and portrayal of everyday life. Its effectiveness has touched the lives of many people; I would say that being funny in their own ways makes them effectual and successful. Lastly, Charlie Brown Cartoon Strip is very educational and young ones can get good things from them.

Funny Comic Strips - How to Make Your First One

When you are actively trying to draw a funny comic strip with cool characters, the only requirement is your creativity (or the desire to draw), imagination and your sense of humor.

With proper strategies, you will be able to make your very first funny comic strip in no time at all. The perfect setting will come along as you go.

How will you make your first funny comic kits?

Step 1: You need to practice drawing cartoons like people, animals, backgrounds and different props normally found in our daily lives such as food items, appliances and other similar items.

Step 2: Once you have basic background on drawing, start creating your characters as if you were creating a movie. Choose catchy names to call your characters and experiment what type of character you wish them to portray. Do not limit yourself since your imagination is unlimited.

Step 3: Stop for a while and think of a plot or a story that will send people laughing. It may be about any other ordinary day that is amusing or a story behind the jokes. Remember, it is your plot and you do what you want with it.

Step 4: Do not finalize your copy on the first try yet. Instead, you should first have a rough copy by utilizing stick figures or abstract drawings to plot your story.

Step 5: Make a catchy title for the entire funny strip.

Step 6: Finalize your strip by completing it with colors, all detail and other essentials. You can also color it through your computer if you are computer savvy.

It is important that when you do the rough copy of your funny strips that you use erasable pencils until you get better at drawing and creating characters. Do not be frustrated if you mess up in your first try since learning starts when you mess up. You just need to be patient and try it out again.

Sometimes a great source of inspiration for your Funny Comic Strips is your family. There could be funny moments that you have shared with your family that you can capture the moment and turn it into a comic strip.

Comic Strips - The Boondocks

The Boondocks is a daily comic strip and now a weekly animation that was created by Aaron McGruder in 1997. Aaron was born in Chicago and went to the University of Maryland where he got his bachelors in African studies. McGruder started writing this strip while working in the presentation center of University of Maryland. His strip debuted in the college's newspaper called Diamondback.

The strip quickly moved from the Diamondback pages in 1997 into the monthly hip hop magazine known as Source. Due to the increasing popularity and loyal fan base of the comic strip, it was then picked up by the Universal Press Syndicate in 1999, making its national debut on April 19 of that same year.

The Boondocks is a popular and very controversial strip, which deals with different issues involving the African-American community, American politics, etc. However, these issues are seen through the eyes of its main character, a ten-year-old African American boy named Huey Freeman.

McGruder sold the television and film rights for The Boondocks to Sony Pictures Entertainment. In the fall of 2005, the strip was adapted into an animated television series with the same name, for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming section. The great success of The Boondocks on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim earned it a second season.

Aaron McGruder in his own right is an activist who frequently speaks on political and cultural issues, some which he as even displayed in his comic strip.

To be honest, I don't fully agree on a lot of McGruder's views and approach, but I would definitely give him the respect I think he well earned on his work.

McGruder has been able to display his views about the community in relating to politics, racism, violence and things of this nature. Although McGruder maintains many stereotypes in strip, he tries to keep the strip as accurate as he possibly can. Whether one likes, dislikes, agrees or disagrees with what is portrayed in The Boondocks, I believe most would admit that it is a good comic strip.

Any person who desires to create a good comic strip can definitely learn from McGruder. McGruder knows he has something to say and a story to tell. Even though his story was seen as very controversial stories, and something that would not be successful, he still spoke out and told his story.

In my opinion McGruder has what many comic strip and book creators of this age are lacking, which is the combination of a willingness to tell a purposeful story and passion for the story.

As a writer, author or comic strip creator, you have to have something to say and you have to have something to offer. I say this because many have compromised their voice to try and gain more recognition or make more money.

Creating a strip like The Boondocks comes with a price because of its outspoken nature concerning politics, cultural and socio-economic class issues. The strip has been withheld by newspapers on many occasions. McGruder has received many complaints from whites and blacks as well. And still, no compromise for McGruder. He continues to try and write what he sees, feels and knows, with a voice that is his own.

The point is not to try and make a controversial strip, but staying true to your work and yourself. Don't be a copycat. Everyone has a voice, except many choose to let their voice get lost in the crowd. As a creator you have to have something to say and you must let it be your voice. In my opinion, The Boondocks is a good example of this.

Comic Strips and Their Vast Popularity!

Comic strips are almost as popular as comic books in some
circles. So I would be remiss if I didn't compile an
article about them. Strips have ended up in a multitude of
newspapers and other media all over the world. Most people
who read the Sunday paper can't pass up the comic section.
I know I sure can't.

Comic strips are short strips or pieces of sequential art,
telling a story. They are drawn by cartoonists and are
published on a recurring basis in newspapers, magazines or
on the Internet.

Strips can be humorous like Beetle Bailey, Hi & Lois, or
Hagar the Horrible, with no continuous story but ends with
a typical punch line. Or they can have a soap opera like
continuity (like Judge Parker or Little Orphan Annie) with
serious story lines in serial form. They are, however,
nonetheless known as "comics" - though the term "sequential
art", coined by cartoonist Will Eisner, is becoming
increasingly popular.

In America, the great newspaper icons of the time, Joseph
Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst were continuously
warring with each other during the late 1800's and early
1900's. This created a great popularity in comic strips and
"The Little Bears" was the first American comic with
recurring characters. Then the now famous, "Yellow Kids"
became the first color comic and was part of the first
Sunday comic section in 1897. This is where the term
"yellow journalism" supposedly formed its origin. Mutt and
Jeff was the first daily comic strip appearing in 1907.

Comic strips not only provide us with the laugh each day or
week that we must have to start the day. They also give a
political platform to some of the strip creators in which
they can pass on their social and political opinions.

Comic strips have long held a distorted mirror to
contemporary society. They have long been used for
political and social commentary, ranging from the staunch
conservative values of Little Orphan Annie to the unabashed
liberalism of Doonesbury.

Pogo used animals to particularly devastating effect,
caricaturing many prominent politicians of the day as
animal denizens of Pogo's Okeefenokee Swamp. Creator Walt
Kelly, in a gutsy move, took on Joseph McCarthy in the
1950s, caricaturing him as a bobcat named Simple J.
Malarkey, a megalomaniac bent on taking over the
characters' bird watching club and rooting out all
undesirables.

Kelly also defended the medium against possible government
regulation in the McCarthy era. At a time when comic books
were coming under fire for supposed sexual, violent, and
subversive content, Kelly feared the same would happen to
comic strips. Going before the congressional subcommittee,
he proceeded to charm the members with his drawings and the
force of his personality. Due to his actions, the comic
strip remained safe for creative satire.

Comic strips have also made quite a splash on the Net since
the World Wide Web came into play in the 1990s. This led to
an explosion of amateur webcomics, comic strips created
solely for Web sites. Webcomics differ from published
comic strips, in that anyone can start his own strip and
publish it on the Web. No longer is there any need for a
creator to meet the approval of a publisher or syndicate.

Currently there are hundreds of webcomics. Many of which
are low quality and sporadically updated. However, a number
have endured, and the best ones rival their newspaper and
magazine counterparts in terms of quality and quantity.
Megatokyo, Penny Arcade, PvP, Sluggy Freelance, and User
Friendly are considered to be among the best of the
webcomics.

The majority of traditional newspaper comic strips now have
some Internet presence. Syndicates often provide archives
of recent strips on their websites.

So the next time you sit down to the Sunday paper, take
particular note of the funnies section. Keep your favorite
comic strips near and dear to your heart. And remember the
trials and tribulations these strips have gone through to
continue to provide you with everlasting entertainment.

Public Speaking: Caricature, Cartoons, and Comic Strips

When certain prominent features of something or someone are highlighted and other features are diminished, that is called caricature. Studies have found that it is easier to identify a political leader from a caricature than from a real photograph.

You can use caricatures of yourself in your own promotional material or in your programs to make fun of yourself. You can do the same thing to make fun of your competitors or your competitor's products by amplifying whatever feature you want to emphasize.

Caricature artists are not too hard to locate. Many times you can find them by looking in the yellow pages under the categories of entertainment or party planning because they frequently perform at parties.

Cartoons and Comic Strips are the most universally accepted formats for humor across cultures. Find out why by viewing this website's article:

'Show 'em' When You Cross Cultures'.

There are three ways to use cartoons: first, you can tell the audience about a cartoon you saw; second, you can cut the cartoon out of its publication and show it; and third, you can make up a cartoon yourself.

I saw a cartoon once where a lady was holding a gun to her purse. The caption said, 'Give up the keys!' I use this example in my Business Lite Seminar when I want to illustrate the use of humor to help ease the tension in embarrassing situations. (I have also used this line many times when I am with a woman who is fumbling through her purse.) When I tell the audience I saw a cartoon, it helps them paint a mental picture of what I am describing with words.

Describing a cartoon is an easy method for using cartoons without having them physically available or needing audio/visual equipment to show them. Showing a cartoon is a more powerful way to convey its humorous message. This is especially true in international audiences where the visual aspect takes on a greater significance. In a very small crowd I might hold up the cartoon or I might pass it around. In larger audiences, the cartoon should be projected (don't forget to get permission from the copyright holder) so everyone can see it clearly. I like this method better anyway because I can control when it pops up on the screen. I want everyone to see the cartoon simultaneously so their laughter will be cumulative. Try to fill the frame of the visual with your cartoon or comic strip. You will create a greater impact.

The third way to use cartoons is to make them yourself. When I first started teaching this subject I could not take advantage of this method unless I hired an artist. Things are different now. There are a number of inexpensive computer software programs available which can be used, one of which is Corel Draw. This program has 25,000 pieces of electronic clip art, many of which are cartoons. I can make custom overhead cartoons for my speaking engagements. All I do is pick an applicable cartoon, add a custom caption for my audience.

Your Wedding Ceremony - Comic Strip Teaches About Going With the Flow at a Perfect Wedding

We're now in the last week or so of Lynn Johnston's current version of her comic "For Better or For Worse." Elizabeth is marrying Anthony. She and Anthony moved her wedding ceremony up because she realized how much she wanted her grandfather at the wedding. Her grandfather has had a heart attack and won't be at the wedding. Now, this is the one place I disagree with the decisions being made. The family has decided not to tell Liz that her grandpa is in the hospital before the ceremony. There are a few reasons I think this isn't a great idea:

* Brides and Grooms do pay attention to their community when they're standing up front. One of the things I liked the most about my wedding ceremony was looking at who was there. My parents were elderly and didn't walk with me. I walked in with my God-daughter Hannah. The first thing I did as we all walked in was go and kiss my parents hello. I know that I was an older bride, but for me, one of the most wonderful things about the day was the huge community gathered to celebrate our marriage. It was magical. I would have noticed if my immediate family wasn't there. And if it were a favorite grandpa, I'd have worried. And that would have overset me more than being told. And if I'm happier than I've ever been before in my life, doesn't it stand to reason I'm stronger?
* Brides and grooms are people as well as brides and grooms. Hopefully, they're adults as well. Being married is a wonderful thing and the day is really special. But it isn't so special that life doesn't continue to happen. I was at a wedding where the bride wanted her grandfather to make his fabulous barbecue ribs for the rehearsal dinner. He was elderly, it was too much for him. So, rather than say anything, two cousins went to work and made the barbecue happen. The bride who'd been a little over-indulged and who was a little over-tired, went crazy because it wasn't his sauce. "It's my wedding, can't I at least have things the way I want them?" Ummm. No. Life isn't just about your wedding. In this case, the thought should have been to honor your grandfather's gifts and to be incredibly grateful that your cousins had stepped up. And, up to that point, everyone else had been enjoying the barbecue, but now we all knew it wasn't "perfect."
* When something unexpected happens, particularly something that cuts at the heart of the couple, this is an amazing opportunity to make your ceremony so real and so personal. If I'd been the celebrant and Liz my bride, I'd have put an extra paragraph in to say how central her grandpa had been in their decision about when to marry. I'd have said a prayer for his health. I'd have dedicated the ceremony to him and his two very happy marriages and asked the Liz and Anthony might follow his lead and live happily and healthily in marriage. It's the unexpected moments that can make a wedding ceremony, always a wonderful thing, completely transcendent.
* Liz and Anthony may want to be able to plan for enough energy to sweep into the hospital after the reception with favors for her grandparents and a piece of cake for Iris. He'd be well enough and happy enough for a quick glimpse of his beloved little girl.

Lynn doesn't marry people for a living, so we have to forgive her for not getting all the details right. Not all that many people think about the wedding ceremony as a living, growing entity. But she certainly got the grandfather's heart attack right. Life does continue to happen, even as you plan and live into your spectacular day and your amazing marriage. So embrace it. Your marriage will be better for it and so will your wedding ceremony.

spiderman comic movie

Spiderman Comics
Spiderman comics have always been on high demand because they are not only bought by children but also by adults who probably read them when they were kids as well. Spiderman comics are a Marvel Comic original that made its debut in 1962 and was written and created by Stan lee and Steve Dikto.

In his first appearance in Marvel Comics Spiderman made his debut in a guest appearance spot, but would later have his own comic line. The Spiderman character real name is Peter Parker a quite and unsure fellow, who after he is bitten by a spider which had been used for experiments, which means basically the spider had been given different gene's that made it stronger, faster and could sense danger when it was near and this what transferred into the young Peter Parker and transformed him to his alter ego the wise cracking, web sling Spiderman.

Spiderman comics became a big hit with the kids as well as with adults and this spun into two cartoons. One cartoon was about Spidey on his own and the other was him and iceman and was called the double duo, which actually was also a comic book. The cartoons then lead to a Spiderman movie which would later be remade in early 2000 into the Spiderman movies which we have come to love. Spiderman also shares the scene with other characters like Mary Jane Watson who is Peter Parker love interest, then there his Aunt and off course the bad guys like the green goblin and Dr. Doom as well as Doc Octopus. The suit of Spiderman has always been red and blue but there was a time the suit changed to black in 1984 when an alien material or matter attached itself to Spidermans suit.

Comic Book Reviews - The Amazing Spider-Man - "Shed"
The Amazing Spider-Man has seen more than its fair share of criticism after the major reboot in "Brand New Day", but readers who have stuck with the wall crawler have been enjoying some solid storytelling, and the latest story arc, entitled "Shed", featured in Amazing Spider-Man issues 630 through 633 might just have spider-fans rushing back to their local comic shop to get a piece of the action.

Though there's only one major fight in the 4 issue storyline, there's plenty of violence and tense, gritty action to sate the appetite of anyone who thinks Spidey books are too soft.

Without ruining the story with spoilers, the storyline is throws another classic villain at Spider-Man, the Lizard. After the past six month's Gauntlet storyline where the descendants of Kraven the Hunter have been throwing a gallery of Spidey's classic foes in the web-head's path, Dr Curt Conners is the latest to get caught in the web.

Dr. Conners obsession with getting custody of his son is bringing out the cold blooded beast in his psyche and he's doing all he can to keep it in check. Problems beyond his control are keeping that from happening and the Lizard breaks loose, this time with some sort of telepathic ability to "unlock" the reptilian side of all humans and the streets of New York end up being engulfed in frenzied riots.

What happens along the way will shock a lot of readers, but the talented team of writers and artists including Zeb Wells and Chris Bachalo put the horrible tale on paper in a terrific way that will keep you gripped from start to finish.

As a long time Spider-Man reader, it's been a long time since I sat with my mouth hanging open at plot developments.

Find issues 630 and on at your local comic shop, or wait for the inevitable trade paperback printing of "Shed".

The Amazing Spiderman Phenomenon
SpiderMan

From his first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15, SpiderMan has grown to be one of the most loved superheroes ever created, appearing in a range of products, from comic books to movies.

The birth of SpiderMan

When we first met SpiderMan in Amazing Fantasy #15, he was just plain Peter Parker, an unpopular high school student. He was lonely and more interested in books than saving anything or anyone. However, due to the timely interference of a radioactive spider, Peter Parker gains the agility and strength of a spider. Armed with this newfound power, Peter Parker sews himself a red body suit (thank goodness for home economics), constructs a crude webbing device, and joins the professional wrestling circuit to make some money. Alas, Peter Parker is far more into making money with his new skills that helping anyone. When he lets some thieves get away, they end up killing his uncle, setting the stage for the guilt that will drive SpiderMan through the rest of his career.

The comic books

SpiderMan was written to be a one-time affair. His appearance in Amazing Fantasy, however, resurrected sagging sale, in fact, SpiderMan proved to be one of Marvel's most profitable superheroes. Far from being a one-time affair, he can now be found in an endless array of comic books series, from The Amazing Spider-Man, to Spectacular SpiderMan, Sensational SpiderMan, and even Ultimate SpiderMan (not to be confused, of course, with Spider-Man Unlimited).

The franchise

Spider Man is more than just comic books. His popularity has led Marvel to create a media franchise for Spider Man, with his story appearing in television cartoons, video games, and even movies. The recent feature films to focus on SpiderMan star Tobey Maguire as our favorite super hero and Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson. The first movie, released in 2002, focuses on the start of SpiderMan's career, with a genetically modified spider taking the place of the original radioactive spider. With his newfound powers, he finds himself face to face with the Green Goblin, played by Willem Dafoe. Propelled by the success of the first movie, SpiderMan returned in 2004 in SpiderMan 2 to face off against Doctor Octopus, a multi-tentacled experiment gone wrong. SpiderMan 3 is scheduled for release in 2007. This time he is set to face his biggest enemy yet, himself in his black venom alien suit.

Building your SpiderMan comic book collection

While SpiderMan has been very successful away from comic books, to truly enjoy him, to truly be a fan, you have to go back to the comic books. This can be difficult, however; finding all of SpiderMan's comics would be a Herculean task. If you need to locate older copies of Spider-Man comics, be sure to look on popular online auction sites. However, you should be prepared to pay for the pleasure of owning an early SpiderMan comic: SpiderMan is not just for kids anymore. Early editions of The Amazing SpiderMan can go for thousands of dollars! But you may be able to get by with slightly later versions of The Amazing SpiderMan, which only go for a few hundred dollars.

How to Easily Win Most Spiderman Games
Spiderman is Peter Parker, the fictional superhero that comic giant Marvel created. Spiderman's humble beginnings started when he appeared in the comic book series Amazing Fantasy Episode 15, which was released in August of 1962. Several decades later, Spiderman became a franchise of all sorts. There's an animated series made for him, several blockbuster movies, and of course, a plethora of video game titles. Spiderman games are included in the list of the most popular action-adventure and fighting games of all time.

From comic books, Spiderman successfully penetrated video games market and since then, it became a worldwide phenomenon. This superhero's game appeared in almost all platforms, from Atari and the first ever Nintendo family computer to the latest ones today such as Sony's PSP and the Nintendo Wii. Spiderman joins the ranks of other famous superheroes that were given their own game series.

It is quite easy to play a Spiderman game. All one has to do is to master his moves. Spiderman, like in the comic books and the movies, possess superpowers made possible by the potent venom of a rare spider that bit him. Spiderman has the ability to cling to walls while having a seriously strong body. He is fast and agile. He exhibits perfect aim and balance when shooting enemies with the spider web coming out of his wrists. All of these abilities are evident in most of his games, especially the ones that are under the fighting genre. Master these moves and you'll be good in all Spiderman games. And yes, Spiderman also has a sixth sense that alerts him of impending dangers. But that would have to be yours to develop. You must exhibit a strong presence of mind when playing these games.

To master Spiderman's moves is to master the controls of the game. Depending on what type of game you're playing, you have to use and maximize Spiderman's many talents so you can easily defeat all enemies including the most brutal ones like Doctor Octopus, Venom, and the Green Goblin. The bottom line, find a Spiderman game that you like playing the most and practice his moves every so often. For a very long time all that really existed was a Spiderman comic book series. When this particular comic book story was released to the general public, technology really did not exist to enable game developers to create an interactive version of the plot. As a result, the public was first given a glimpse of what Spiderman might be like via a television series and then later various movies.

When technology finally advanced to the point where the Spiderman story could be turned into an interactive immersive experience through which players could literally feel as if they were part of the action, the first versions were still extremely rudimentary compared to what is available today. However, anybody who really loved Spiderman was completely delighted by the fact that these games could be played.

What has happened in the past 10 years is quite remarkable. We have seen the emergence of computer technology as well as game system technology that has enabled game designers to basically re-create incredibly detailed Spiderman plot lines in all of the Spiderman games which have been created and designed in the past several years. So what does this actually mean for you if you happen to be an individual who is interested in this particular genre of game?

In short, it basically means that you are going to feel as if though you are literally living and breathing within an interactive Spiderman universe. Not only will you be able to interact with other characters, but you will also be able to engage in high action activities that will require a great deal of skill as well is a great deal of concentration. Needless to say, Spiderman games can be profoundly entertaining and a lot of fun.

In a very general sense, there are three basic ways that you can play this type of game. First, you can play through a cartridge-based game system. This is the type of system that gets connected to your television set. The second option is to purchase software that gets installed on your computer system. Both of these two options give players incredibly rich immersive experiences with high-end graphics and incredibly moving audio quality. The third option is to play Spiderman games over the Internet. Here, the graphics will be less intense and the audio will be somewhat more limited.

So if you happen to be somebody who really likes Spiderman, now you know that there are a wide variety of different Spiderman games that you can enjoy and that you will find incredibly fun and entertaining.

Spider-Man - The Unlikely Super Hero
It is very difficult in today's commercialized world not to be familiar with Spider-Man. And it doesn't matter whether you have young school age children, you're in college or like me... you're as "old as dirt", we have all been exposed to this most unlikeliest of all "Super Heroes".

But if he is not a great super hero then why has his popularity grown ever since he was first introduced back in 1962? It seems as though we just can't get enough of him. Don't get me wrong, I am also a great fan of his, but Spider-Man (real name: Peter Parker) is not your typical super hero. I would even go so far as to say that he even challenges the definition of what a super hero really is.

Spider-Man does possess "special powers" - like being able to cling to any surface, "spider-quick" reflexes that operate up to 40 times faster than those of any normal person and an uncanny spider-sense, a tingling sensation in the back of his neck, which warns him of danger. But he also is very human.

What other super hero do you know that talks to himself, misses appointments, catches the flu - when he has to fight, forgets to put film in his camera (Peter is a photographer by trade) and he even has trouble paying his rent. And I believe that these are the things that make him our favorite hero. Because Spider-Man is the super hero that could be any one of us.

But did you know that as popular as Spider-Man is today - that he was originally a one-shot experiment for a dying comic book series and actually almost didn't even get into print at all because the editor in charge at Marvel Comics thought that people would be turned off reading about spiders. However, since the series was going to be terminated anyways, Goodman finally agreed to let Spider-Man debut in August of 1962 in Amazing Fantasy #15. And by 1970, Marvel Comics had become one of the dominant comic book publishers, with Spider-Man as their "flagship" series.

Introduced as Peter Parker, a nerdy science whiz kid, that was not only extremely shy but he was considered clumsy, uncoordinated and a big wimp, that was constantly being bullied.

Orphaned at the age of four, when his parents were killed in a plane crash, Peter was forced to live with his elderly Aunt May and Uncle Ben.

One day during a science demonstration Peter was bitten by a radio-active spider and as a result, he receives spider-like powers such as superior strength and lightning fast reflexes. However, being a super hero and saving people is not exactly what Peter had in mind. He was more interested in making money with his new powers as a professional wrestler, which brought him fame as a big TV star.

One day while at the studio, Peter was confronted by a burglar and instead of trying to catch him, Peter let him get away. After all, it wasn't his job to stop him - that was up to the police. It was the same thief that, a short time later, killed Peter's best friend, his Uncle Ben.

Peter now filled with guilt, over not stopping the person who killed his uncle. And it is that guilt that will drive Spider-Man through the rest of his career as a vigilante.

Spiderman Party Decorating Ideas
Your son has decided on a Spiderman themed party and for you that means the adventure begins way before the party starts. Decorating for a Spiderman Birthday Party can be simple or elaborate. A few simple tricks can take your party scene from drab to fab and doesn't have to cost a lot. Spiderman Party decorations are very popular and easy to come by, but if you want something different, here are a few suggestions.

Spiderman's basic colors are red, black and blue. Be sure to incorporate these colors along with spiders and web. Other notable Spiderman decorations can include the city backdrop, where he swings from building to building, the comic book and the Spiderman villains. With so many options you decoration ideas are limitless.

Background Scene - Idea #1

Spiderman swings from building to building in New York City. You can replicate this effect by using large black construction paper, poster boards or cardboard. Cut different size rectangular shapes to represent the city buildings. Cut out windows in each building and tape yellow construction paper behind the board to have the lights on in the windows. Arrange the buildings in a random order to create the city skyline. Adhere to a blank wall. You can also print out Spiderman clipart and paste to the scene.

Background Scene - Idea #2

Create a comic book on your wall. You can use butcher paper as your comic book medium. You can create it yourself and then add to the wall or can make it a fun activity for the party goers. Draw or paste the black comic strip boxes on the butcher paper. Using clipart or pages from a coloring book cut out the characters you want in the comic strip. The kids can color the pages before you cut them out. You can put the comic strip together in several ways

1. Assign one box to each child and have them create the comic together. The first child starts it off and each child gets to add their part of the story based. It's a creative way for the children to use their imagination. They can paste their own colored pages to the comic. Be sure to have different pages of many characters to make the story interesting.

2. Similarly you can create the scenes but leave the captions empty. Have each child fill in a caption to create the story

3. You can also use the comic stripe as a pin the Spiderman in the comic. The concept would be the same as pin the tail on the donkey.

Spider Webs

Spider webs are synonymous with Spiderman so incorporating webs into your décor is a must. Whether you use leftover Halloween decorations or create your own webs. Spider webs can add the right touch to your party décor. If you have time and patience and would like to create your own spider webs, here are some suggestions.

Use crepe paper. Cut the crepe paper or streamers into long strips. Lay one strip on top of another to form an X. Now lay another strip on top of the x across the middle. Repeat the previous step but lay the strip in the other direction. You should have formed a "star" shape. Be sure to tape or glue the "star together before the next step. Now using strips half the length of the strips you used to used to make the star, tape the strips across the other strips to begin to from the web. The longer the star strips are the bigger the web will be. Glue paper spiders to the webs for an added effect.

Spiders

Hang plastic spiders from web and the ceiling using string.

Decorate tables, finger sandwiches, cupcakes and more using toy spiders.

Other Cool Decorating Ideas

Hang Spiderman posters on walls

Dedicate a wall to the Spiderman Villains. Enlarge clipart and hang on walls.

Sprinkle red, black and blue confetti on tables.

Fill up red balloons and paint Spiderman's mask on them.

Make or purchase a life size Spiderman cut out. You can create a background scene or place a blank background. This is also a great place for photos.

Your decorating is only limited by your imagination. Even if you can't afford to purchase the Spiderman party decor or just choose not to, using the basic color scheme, webs and spiders are a must to create the perfect Spiderman Party scene.
Obama Collectibles - Own a Piece of Modern History With Obama Memorabilia
We have just witnessed one of the most exciting presidential campaigns in modern history. The 2008 campaign for United States President had many ups and downs, and some surprising twists. The most surprising was the amazing rise of a little known senator from Illinois named Barack Obama, who in mere months went from underdog to front runner.

Along the way, people began to hear his message of hope and change and realized that America could be great again, if we all just worked together. Barack Obama created a movement that is still going strong today. Of course, with any movement of this size, there's a lot of history being made and we all want to own a little piece of it for ourselves so that we can always remember this special time.

Barack Obama's popularity has created a growing demand for all sorts of Obama collectibles of every size, shape and form. If you supported Barack Obama during the campaign, then you probably already own some campaign memorabilia like buttons, pins, hats, posters, yard signs and t-shirts.

Fortunately, there are now many more Obama related things to collect besides campaign items. Some of these items may grow in value over time, while others are just keepsakes for you to treasure forever.

Barack Obama Commemorative Coins - Barack Obama coins are one of the hottest selling items right now and there are several ads on TV offering a selection of colorful coins with his image on them. Here are some facts about Barack Obama coins:

The coins being advertised the most are U.S. Mint coins that have been colorized with a special coating.

There is some controversy as to the real value of these coins. If you intend to purchase these coins, be aware that even though they are currency, their value has been greatly diminished by the colorization process. Meaning, they're pretty to look at, but won't grow in monetary value over time.

The U.S. Mint has issued a warning concerning these colorized coins stating that they do not endorse, sponsor or authorize any coin that has been altered or defaced for commercial purposes. Therefore, if you buy them for a keepsake that's fine, but don't buy extra sets counting on being able to resell them for a profit later on. Colorized coins are worthless.

Having said that, there are some very nice sets out there that can be displayed and even used as educational pieces. If you see any coin set that is being advertised as going up in value, do your research before buying.

Barack Obama Commemorative Plate - Obama plates are also being heavily advertised on TV and elsewhere as high-quality collectibles. A ceramic collector plate of Barack Obama usually is the size of a normal dinner plate and features an official looking color picture of Barack Obama. Some plates are done by independent artist and can feature embossed photos of Obama or the first family.

An Obama plate may or may not come with a display stand, which is a small stand that you can sit the plate on top of to display it on a shelf, or inside a glass cabinet.

Barack Obama Poster Art - This has been one of the most popular items during the campaign and has now branched out into the post election era. The most famous of all Barack Obama posters is the Obama hope poster done by artist Shepard Fairey. This iconic poster was originally hung around Chicago and other urban cities as a cool way to promote the change candidate.

After the election, this particular poster has only grown in value and popularity. It is a physical reminder that in these stressful times, there's always hope for a better tomorrow. In addition to the Shepard Fairey Obama poster featuring the words hope or change, there's another popular one that says progress.

There are two versions of the Obama progress poster. One created by Fairey, and another rarer one created by an artist named Scott Hansen. Hansen's poster differs from Fairey's in that it has a more retro vibe and features the images of people surrounding a large tree. The Obama symbol is in the middle and the word Progress is written in large letters on the bottom. There are also other unique posters created by a variety of talented artists.

Barack Obama Tee Shirts - Creativity abounds when it comes to t-shirts featuring the image of Barack Obama. There are the official tees created by the campaign, but many people love the uniquely original versions that can only be found from creative artists of many stripes.

There are cheap Obama t shirts and nicer urban Obama shirts like the powerful Obama MLK t shirts featuring the likeness of our 44th President and Martin Luther King, Jr. I've also seen some cool ones commemorating the inauguration.

Newspaper Cover with Obama - There are a lot of people who like to own a copy of big city newspapers that feature a major event on the cover. A newspaper shows off an important story like no other periodical can. The bigger the city, the better. Many people are now seeking copies of New York newspapers with Obama election results, or Obama newspaper headlines. This is because The New York Times is read by people around the world.

The Chicago Sun Times and USA Today covers are examples of other newspapers that are highly collectible. Obama's historic election and inauguration are captured in exciting detail by these daily papers.

Barack Obama Commemorative Magazine - Obama Time magazine covers are in high demand due to the popularity of both Obama himself and Time magazine. Time has been documenting important world events for decades and seems to be a collector favorite for this reason.

There are other great Obama magazine covers like that cool one from Ebony that features Obama wearing sunglasses and exiting his ride. Another great one is the recent Rolling Stone magazine cover with the blue background. There will be many more of these - count on it.

Barack Obama Buttons - Because they're so easy to make, there are hundreds of buttons featuring the likeness of Barack Obama. Many people already have official campaign buttons. However, there are many more created by independent artists with all sorts of designs and colors. If you're collecting Obama memorabilia, you've got to have at least one cool Obama button.

Barack Obama Mugs - There are black Obama coffee mugs and white obama coffee mugs with all kinds of cool artwork. Buy one to drink out of and one just for display. The more unique the design is, the more you'll treasure it.

Obama Comics - Yes, there is already a comic book that features Obama on the cover (Amazing Spiderman #583 Variant Comic Book). It's a special edition Marvel Spiderman Comic where our superhero, Spiderman, saves inauguration day. This is very limited and highly collectible. The creators of the series found out that Obama collected Spiderman comics when he was a kid. I'm sure there will be more Obama comic book fun in the future.

Barack Obama Shoes - Believe it or not, you can buy Obama shoes or Obama sneakers that have unique Obama graphics on them. These aren't official shoes made by famous name brand manufacturers, but they sure are super cool.
Using Comic Books to Illustrate Political News
Some say that "Captain America" and "Superman" were little more than symbols of American patriotism, calling citizens to accept the call of duty for their country and do something larger than life. Superman fought the Japanese during WWI and Captain America punched Hitler in the face during WWII. However, today's political news resounds through the comic graphic novels world in an entirely different way now. Some dark comics came out of the Reagan years, but superheroes have been plunged into all-out civil warfare against their own governments.

On October 8th, 2008, just before the November elections, John McCain and Barack Obama starred in their own comic books published by IDW Publishing, only it was nothing like you would think. Even though "Savage Dragon" publicly endorsed Barack Obama in a recent issue, the IDW publications were presented as objective, illustrated, political news biographies of the two nominees. It has been described as "heavy on the facts, light on opinion." The McCain book featured art by Stephen Thompson and writing by Andy Helfer (who also did "Road to Perdition" and "A History of Violence") and the Obama book was illustrated by Tom Morgan and written by Jeff Mariotte (who has done Superman, Spider-Man and Star Trek comic book series).

"We didn't do anything that is sensational here," said Scott Dunbier from IDW. "We're stuck to the facts." Dunbier added that graphic novels have proven extremely effective in reaching and educating people. "We're not in the business of doing textbooks," he clarified, "But I think comic books really do have the great potential to inform and teach and do more than just standard superhero comics." Fans can pre-order the books through their website or visit Uclick to view the comics over their cell phones.

Political news isn't always so directly reported through comic book art, though. Sometimes, events in modern life are paralleled through events in the comic book heroes universe. For example, Marvel Comic's "Civil War," released in 2007, introduces an epic battle following the passage of "the Superhuman Registration Act" (much like the Patriot Act in our world), which asks that people trade in some of their liberties for security.

The Registration, more specifically, requires all costumed heroes to be licensed and trained, disclosing their secret identities to the government. While some characters in the DC Universe, like Fantastic Four's Reed Richards and Iron Man support the registration, others like Captain America develop an underground resistance. Spiderman initially supports the idea so much he unmasks himself on live television, but later recants when he sees the Abu Ghraib-like prisons. Whether these obtuse allegories are an effective way of making a political statement or not remains to be seen.

There are also political news people like K. Thor Jensen and Jenny Gonzalez who focus on war stories. In "House of Twelve Goes To War," the depictions focus on little-known aspects of the War on Terrorism. "Some sad, some action-packed, some unfathomable, but I promise you each and every one is 100% true," the website declares. "Team 12 was drafted by the government and forced into working towards its war effort. When we returned, we decided the truth must be told in the most effective way possible; auto-bio comics! These are our stories of our experiences during the Great War."

Nerd Halloween Costume
Finding your Halloween costume doesn't have to be a frustrating event. If you're bored of the traditional costumes found at the local retail outlets, you can find some good costumes on-line. A nerd Halloween costume is one that never fails to be a success. It is a unisex costume that has the advantage of not requiring make up, masks or cumbersome parts. You can wear comfortable clothing, and it doesn't take much work to assemble the costume. Because the nerd costume isn't meant to be scary, it can be worn in almost any environment, including parties, at the office or at school. It's a popular and easily recognizable costume made even more fun if you choose to act the part. Joking in your nerd costume is an easy icebreaker that can keep the social atmosphere light and fun. Halloween is a great time to let your silly side come out. Portraying a nerd is simple. Just remember to be clumsy and a little awkward.

There are plenty of celebrities to model your Nerd Costume after. Most famous actors have portrayed a nerd on film or claim to have been one before being famous. Some memorable examples on film include, Noah Wyle acting as Steve Jobs, in Pirates of the Silicon Valley, Angelina Jolie acting as Kate Libby, in Hackers and of course, the actors portraying the nerds in The Revenge of the Nerds. Famous TV characters, Steve Urkle, Kramer, George, Jerry Seinfed, Ugly Betty, and famous people like Lady Gaga, Howard Stern, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Albert Einstein have set the trend for making Nerd Costumes fun.

There are many famous people you wouldn't necessarily think of as nerds, but who have "nerd behavior". Off-screen, Natalie Portman was a research assistant at a psychology lab, went to Harvard, and was published in two science journals. She was invited to speak to a class at Columbia on terrorism and anti-terrorism. Kate Beckinsdale wrote award winning poetry and short stories, she won two awards. Nicolas Cage, and Barrack Obama are admitted comic book nerds. With all the famous nerds out there, you'll be in good company if you choose this for your Halloween costume.

When it comes down to selecting your nerd Halloween costume, if you want to avoid the hassle of creating your own costume, you can easily find what you're looking for online. You can select a simple costume like Harry Potter, Where's Waldo or Ugly Betty, or opt for a generic one and add your own flair to the nerd costume. Whatever you choose, it is sure to be a hit because Halloween is the time where everyone loves a nerd.

The Unmockable Obama
Recently, American television host Larry King interviewed comedian Joy Behar. When he asked if the current administration was hard to make fun of, she replied that it was difficult to mock the Obamas "because they're really - they're kind of really perfect, aren't they?".

This provoked a deluge of derision in the blogosphere, mainly because it encapsulated an attitude that has been widespread in the media and entertainment industries since Barack Obama began his campaign for the White House. Many mainstream journalists and editors were openly barracking (Baracking?) for Obama from the start and are still reluctant to criticize him. Famous actors, singers and directors continue to fawn over him in a way that has been hard to believe and difficult to stomach. The fact that Behar is a comedian makes her observation even more cringe-worthy.

In an ideal world, comedians are to politicians what Hamas is to Israel: hell bent on their destruction, relentlessly firing salvos, and determined never to make peace. In the real world, however, comedians do have their prejudices. They tend to lean left the world over for various reasons. Yet as often as not they don't let their politics get in the way of a good joke. Even though they overwhelmingly voted for his party, American stand-ups mercilessly and hilariously mocked Bill Clinton for years. Obama is clearly in a different league, however, and is perceived to be an almost Christ-like figure by otherwise determinedly cynical people.

While Behar's comments were the most adulatory, other well known American comedians have expressed similar sentiments. Bill Maher, host of Real Time, has been quoted as saying: "It's always better if the president is stupid, or fat, or cheating on his wife, or angry, or a phony. This guy is none of those things. And that is really unfair." Tonight Show host Jay Leno quipped: "I'm going to miss President Bush. Barack Obama is not easy to do jokes about. He doesn't give you a lot to go on. See, this is why God gave us Joe Biden."

Needless to say there is much to mock in President Obama - the vagueness of his rhetoric, for example. And he obviously has a huge ego. Then there's his pompous, declamatory oratory, which his gullible supporters mistake for profundity. The more star-struck satirists should remember their Monty Python and understand that he is not the Messiah, he's just a very smart, charismatic dude.

And American comedians are making fun of him. But even if they do find something to mock, there are other factors that restrain them to some degree. Many are reluctant to humorously deride a black man for fear of being seen as racist. (Bush was easy. They never had to worry about mocking a Texan for fear of being, er, Texist.)

Impersonating Obama can be problematic, particularly if you're white. For a year, versatile white comic actor Fred Armisen has been the resident Obama impersonator on Saturday Night Live. Unlike his co-star Tina Fey, who struck gold with her Sarah Palin impersonation, Armisen has been widely panned for his work - even by Obama himself. Much of the criticism has focused on the quality of his performance, with many pundits saying he hasn't quite captured the President's mannerisms; that he's just not funny. But the decision to cast him instead of more accurate black impersonators has attracted accusations of racism as well.

This is understandable as political correctness is a major barrier for American comedians. There are few successful ones there who are openly right of center. However, some have managed to subvert the dominant paradigm. Dennis Miller, a former SNL comic and now popular political pundit and talk show host is the most well known. While his provocative rants flay liberals, particularly on matters of national security, he did begin his career as one and still holds some of their positions - on abortion, for example. He only veered noticeably to the right after the attacks on the World Trade Center. "9/11 changed me," he said.

Sadly, there is much less comedic diversity in Australia. Aussie comics generally are so relentlessly, drearily "right on" it's just not funny! Which is why it will be interesting to see how they continue to deal with "The One" in the coming months.

Last year's Melbourne International Comedy Festival featured many shows with environmental and climate change themes, several of them Australian. Examples included Rod Quantock's 2050 - The Musical, a show about humanity's relentless pillaging of the planet's resources, and the Dave Callan offering Daylight Savings for the Doomsday Clock. Rather than being skeptical - something humorists used to be - they overwhelmingly promoted the worst case scenarios of the green high priests of doom. It was as if the festival had gone from the satirical to the liturgical!

Perhaps the only overt dissent from deep green dogma occurred when comics were told of the plan to turn the lights off in the Melbourne Town Hall for Earth Hour. This provoked much outrage in many of those performing at the venue. It was ironic that performers were preaching that the Earth was doomed unless billions made major lifestyle sacrifices. But when some of them had to make just one minor compromise for a mere 60 minutes? Not a chance! Sadly, this farce occurred entirely offstage, so paying audiences were deprived of many quality laughs.

This recent history gives clues as to what we might expect this April. Now that Obama - widely believed by his acolytes to possess mystical powers that will heal the planet - is in the White House, I suspect these gloomy offerings will be replaced by joyous presidential themed entertainments. But there will be no derisive President Obama gags, of course. The pervasive Behar-like fawning might just make 2009 the least funny comedy festival yet.

the marvel comic

Marvel Comics Silver Age - What Made There Superheroes Like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk Great!
I was thinking about 1960′s Marvel Comics and what made that foundation of a comic book universe great, why those characters and books got popular, and I came up with 3 concepts which I will expand upon:

1. Community

2. Lack of Space Alien Origins

3. Relatable Heroes

1. Community

The Marvel Heroes lived mostly in the same real world city and connected together and ran into each other. With DC Comics for example, it seems that every hero lives in their own fictional city made just for them. Batman has Gotham City. Superman has Metropolis. Green Lantern has Coast City. You get the idea.

With Marvel Comics, most of them occupied New York City. For readers, this made for a relatable setting. Where you as a reader could believe such meetings could take place. And even better was, as a writer setting up a situation to make heroes living in the same city meet is not that difficult.

2. Lack of Space Alien Origins

This was a key factor overlooked by most anyone I hear mention Marvel's success. Outside of the Silver Surfer and Thor, EVERY Marvel superhero made then was just a human being. They did not get their powers from some outer space creature, or some other unrelatable idea.

I think the whole "alien origin" aspect dilutes a character into that of "just another silly comic book character" from the mainstream public viewpoint. A regular person on the street can't relate to that. And having an alien origin just seems silly to a non comic buyer.

Now sure you can say: Is getting hit with a gamma bomb? Or a bite from a spider more relatable? I hear what you are saying, and you are right, but also wrong. I think the elements like the above are more plausible and believable for a comic book setting. The whole "suspension of disbelief" thing. But something like an alien origin is too over the top.

Check out the Spider-Man movie or the X-men movie for example. Their origins sound plausible enough on the surface that the public can accept it. Now say in the above movies, a space ship drops down and zaps a guy who then becomes Spider-Man. That sounds rather silly doesn't it? Or a space ship drops down and zaps a guy turning him into the Hulk. Not as cool an origin right? And that's my point. Whether by planning or random luck, Stan Lee and company avoided the alien origins idea.

As for Thor and the Surfer, they didn't spoil the whole thing because it was just a few that had alien origins and therefore can still fit in.

Also Thor was made very human first by Stan Lee. He was really a human who acquired Thor's power. That human base really anchored Thor as a character.

And the Surfer brought about and was used as an outside observer of humans. Looking at us from a viewpoint that we could never see. Telling us how basically how our world was a paradise. If only we would stop destroying each other and live in peace, could we see this world for the gift it really is.

3. Relatable Heroes

This is why those Marvel heroes got popular as well. These Marvel heroes had problems and situations we could relate to. Despite their fantastic powers and battles, they were also down to earth. They had anchors that made us relate or feel sorry for them. These were not invincible heroes, like DC comics had. The DC Heroes being mostly perfect and in essence rather shallow when you peeled back the layers. The Marvel Heroes were given a depth and understanding that DC did not have.

For example, with the exception of Iron Man, everyone else had financial problems. And you really did not want to be Iron Man, who had to suffer in secret.

Spider-Man had relationship, financial, and school problems.

The X-men had trouble fitting in with society, yet at the same time an obligation to protect us.

In Closing

I think these three factors were the keys that made Marvel Comics the successful universe that it is today. And the reason why back then readers picked up the books in the first place. Even today I notice many creators DO NOT use these same rules. For example when I read Image Comics Savage Dragon and the Pitt with their alien origins. My feel for them as a character got disappointed. They just lost a relatable factor with me.

Or you have generic Punisher knock offs, who are blood thirsty heroes. Yet their is no emotional origin for these heroes to make me care for them or their situations.

Making a successful comic book universe today is difficult, if not all but impossible. But I think if you stick to the above three principles, you won't be steered far wrong.

Rob is a long time comic book fan, collector and commentator. He likes to share his thoughts, opinions and ideas about comic books and related pop culture media.

Top 100 Best Villains of Marvel Comics
The search for top 100 best Marvel villains of all time can be compared to an epic journey. The initial idea was to come up with a top 10 list. A top 10 list was quickly thrown away because limiting this list to 10 would be an injustice. The top 10 transitioned to a top 25, then to a top 50, then it was clear a top 100 was needed due to the sheer number of villains to choose from. Marvel villains are epic and we needed to create a list equally epic.

The Marvel comic universe is quite expansive and it was extremely difficult to come up with a top 100. This list is not perfect - lists never are - but we hope the reception is warm because we love comics just as much as you. We'd like to discuss one of our favorite Marvel Villains on the list - Mad Thinker.

Mad Thinker is ranked #34 on our list. For many years the police did not know the Mad Thinker's existence, despite the various criminal activities he had masterminded over that period. He only leapt into the public eye when he went head-to-head with the Fantastic Four. A brilliant strategist, he tempted each of them away from New York with various impossible-to-refuse jobs.

He subsequently used their absence to enter the Baxter Building and steal Reed Richards' inventions. Manufacturing superhuman androids based on Richards' designs he used them to battle the Fantastic Four. His motives remain unclear - perhaps no one is brilliant enough to understand them or could the Mad Thinker just be enjoying the game?

Mad Thinker is just one of many reasons why we decided to expand our list to a top 100. As we were saying before, there are so many great villains in the Marvel Comic universe that to leave a villain as great as the Mad Thinker off would be an incredible injustice. Another Marvel villain that unfortunately would have been left off our list if it was a top 10 list is Scorpion.

Let's discuss a little bit of Scorpions background. Dr. Farley Stillwell had developed a method of giving animals the attributes of other creatures. When newspaper editor J. Jonah Jameson found out, he asked Stillwell to test it out on a human guinea pig, a private investigator named Mac Gargan. Stillwell's amazing procedure gave Gargan the strength and agility of a scorpion.

Stillwell also provided him with a specially designed mechanical tail. Nothing comes without a price and the cost to Gargan - now calling himself the Scorpion - was the loss of his sanity. Contracted to put an end to SPIDER-MAN, it was only by his wits that the wallcrawler defeated the hugely powerful, and vengeful Scorpion. Since then, Scorpion has become an assassin-for-hire, his intermittent attempts to defeat Spider-Man being repeated foiled.

You are invited to check out the bios for all 100 Marvel Villains.

Know More About Marvel Comic Characters
Comics are a favorite of mostly all kids and quite a number of teenagers and grownups. You would get to see some or the other comic book in the rooms of the little ones. One such very famous comic book is marvel comic. Moreover marvel comic is the very company that has given the entire world the extremely famous super heroes. Yes the marvel comic characters are eminent worldwide. There are so many characters in that you could not remember the name if you come to see the list for the first time. Interestingly most of them are quite different from the other in appearance, powers, abilities, skills, likes and dislikes etc it is this uniqueness of each character that the characters are so famous individually. type='text'>Why Comic Book And Movie

Why Comic Book And Movie Superheroes Are Still Popular

Comic books have been published in America for nearly 100 years, but they didn't hit their stride until the 1940s when characters like Superman and Batman were introduced. Now, over 60 years later, comic book movies have become staples of the summer movie season. This year saw the release of "Spider-Man 3," "Fantastic Four 2" and "Ghost Rider, "(all based on Marvel comic book characters). Plus, the surprise hit of 2007, the Spartan epic, "300," was based on Frank Miller's acclaimed 1998 comic book series. These four movies alone have made over $700 million for the bean counters in Hollywood. Not bad for characters that appear in $3 comic books each month.

2008 may be the best year so far for comic book movies, with Will Eisner's (the father of the American graphic novel) "The Spirit" due in January, "Watchmen," directed by 300's Zack Snyder due in March, Robert Downey Jr. as "Iron Man," Ed Norton as "The Incredible Hulk" and Christian Bale back as Batman facing off against Heath Ledger as The Joker in "The Dark Knight."

Why have comic book movies become so big in the last decade? "Two reasons," says Marc Bowker, owner of Alter Ego Comics, a comic book store in Lima, OH. "First, special effects technology has finally caught up with the imaginations of comic book artists." The Spider-Man films are a perfect example of movies that could not have been done well without the advances in effects technology. (Want proof? Check out "The Chinese Web," a Spider-Man TV movie made in the 1970s.) The second reason, according to Bowker, "Hollywood has run out of original ideas." Most of the best films of the last 10 years have been based on existing material - novels, comic books, musicals, etc. Many comic book characters have 25-50 years worth of stories to choose from that would make excellent films.

Movie studios have taken over the biggest comic book convention in the world, The San Diego Comic Con, where they buy up the rights to comic book characters, big and small. The studios also use San Diego to make major casting announcements for comic-related movies and start building buzz around those films. At the 2007 San Diego Comic Con held in July, Zack Snyder was officially announced as the director of "Watchmen," and key cast members were revealed. Warner Bros. also held a scavenger hunt to promote the 2008 release of the new Batman film, "The Dark Knight."

The relationship between Hollywood and comic books shows no signs of ending anytime soon. There are dozens of movies based on comic books in active development, including non-super hero comics like Vertigo's "Y: The Last Man," and this fall's "30 Day's of Night." As long as the comic book industry keeps creating memorable characters with great stories, Hollywood will be waiting to bring those stories to the big screen.

<img Fantastic Four became a popular super hero team after the release of their comic books via Marvel Comics in late 1960. Comic book lovers lost no time taking a liking to the four main characters, who gained super powers after being exposed to cosmic rays during a mission to outer space for the sake of science. Characters that would later be brought to life through live action in these movies.

Who is the Fantastic Four and why are they fantastic? Here's the who and why:

Reed Richards also known as Mister. Fantastic, who can stretch and reshape his body in inhuman ways

Susan Storm Richards also known as Invisible Woman, who is able to use light to make herself as well as others and objects around her invisible

Johnny Storm also known as The Human Torch, who can both control and project fire from his body. Additionally he is able to fly.

Ben Grimm also known as The Thing, who is transformed and has orange rock-like skin and super human strength.

In the film adaptations (The original movie and its sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) the characters were portrayed by actors Ioan Gruffudd, Chris Evans, Micheal Chiklis and actress Jessica Alba.

The Fantastic Four movies were certainly long awaited by comic book fans that enjoy seeing their favorite stories come to life on the big screen.

Like most comic books, the Fantastic Four's success led to much media interest, bringing about animated television series, video games, action figures and other merchandise. Yet, the super foursome wouldn't hit the theaters until 2005; despite the fact that Constantin Film purchased character rights to make a film in the mid-1980's, and even released a low budget version of the Fantastic Four movies in the early 1990's, which would never receive an official release.

20th Century Fox Film Corporation would later pick up the rights to the film and attempt to give it the big budget adaptation comic book fans felt the characters and their story deserved. However, fans of the classic comic books and comic book based movie lovers, as well as critics gave mixed reviews to the first film and again to its sequel. The films were merely called decent in their best reviews. Still, there is talk of another film joining the Fantastic Four movies franchise. A reboot that may feature a whole new cast and give the fearsome foursome a facelift!

The Saviors of Comic Book Movies

Hugh Jackman and Robert Downey Jr The Saviors of Comic Book Movies

Before the likes of X-Men and Spider-Man, comic book movies were in a dire place. Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin, had effectively destroyed the Batman movie franchise and put other comic book movies on hold. Marvel (and DC eventually) had to go dark to save the comic book movie industry. After Marvel released Blade, which won worldwide acclaim, Marvel decided to push forward with their superhero blockbusters. Starting with X-Men.

Produced by 20th Century Fox, X-Men was a revolution for comic book movies. Part sci-fi, part action X-Men pushed new boundaries for superhero films. Rather than follow the classic route of men in spandex saving the day, X-Men was an un-conventional superhero film dealing with issues of prejudice towards those who are different. It's break out star was Australian actor Hugh Jackman who played the clawed mutant Wolverine. Though over a foot taller than his comic book counter part, Jackman was able to convey tons of emotion, with few lines making for one of the most captivating heroes in superhero film history. He made the audiences sympathize with his character's tortured past, but at the same time maintained a cult 'badass' approach that made him an instant star upon the films release.

X-Men's success paved way for a new wave of superhero movies. Two years later on 2002, Sony released Spider-Man which went on to earn two sequels, Universal released the iconic monster Hulk to mixed reviews, whilst Fox began throwing out superhero movies such as DareDevil, Fantastic 4 and Electra.

2 sequels later for Jackman, the stardom began to wear off. Though he had enough popularity to warrant a solo movie in 2009: X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the X-Men films began attracting critiscm for focusing too heavily on Wolverine. Other crucial team members such as Cyclops and Storm were not being given enough screen time and the X-Men movies began to fall flat. The comic book movie industry was not helped by the fact that Sony's Spider-Man 3 was critically panned, thus putting the web slinger's adventures on hold for the time being.

Enter Marvel Studios with Iron Man. To freshen the industry up, Marvel decided to debut one of their B-List superheroes on screen. Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Hollywood rebel Robert Downey Jr as genius Tony Stark, and Gwyneth Paltrow as his assistant, Iron Man saved the comic book movie industry from effectively 'selling out.' Downey Jr. made Iron Man fun and witty but added depth by exploring the characters narcissistic routes, whilst also giving us a hero we'd never seen before. Iron Man's gritty opening, with Stark realizing the truth behind his legacy as weapons manufacturer, put the film on a winning path of a hero trying to redeem himself. The film earned worldwide acclaim, and kick started a revolutionary cinematic universe, containing A-lister The Incredible Hulk other b-list heroes such as Captain America and Thor. Next year will see all four team up in the Avengers movie, which proves to be the most ambitious superhero movie to date.

If it weren't for Hugh Jackman we probably wouldn't have Robert Downey Jr. As a superhero anyway. Jackman made superheroes cool again with his badass raging Wolverine, whilst Downey Jr. just made them even cooler with his rich playboy one-man army. Forget Nolan and Batman, Wolverine and Iron Man are the true superheroes of this generation.

<img best and worst comic book movies, what movies would your list contain? You probably admire the adaptation of certain features of characters or the use of certain super weapons that just made that comic worth watching as long as you could. However, let me break it down in a way that we all can agree the best and the worst comic book movies.

The spider-man series is likely one of the best adapted books into a movie that all age genres can watch. The use of almost real graphics to depict the war scenes is a classic. Iron Man is also undoubtedly another of the comic book movies that changes the whole illusion aspect. While most super power movies let us feel just the surface of illusion and we never really get into the depth of the characters, Iron Man and its sequel Iron Man 2 really get you into the reality of illusion. Robert Downey Jr does not disappoint his fans as the man behind the iron contraption.

When it comes to Persepolis, one movie critic defined it as a cinematic poetry in black and white. The movie is a powerful animation of the power of resilience. Coupled with an unflagging sense of humor, Persepolis revolves around the tale of a young woman's quest in search of freedom in an oppressive regime.

Coming to the other side of the scale, the movie Virus was a disappointing failure. The plot was not well developed despite the great special effects. It proved to be illogical, unrealistic and the general acting was simply wooden. Overall, it can be considered one of the worst comic book movies. Another disappointment, unfunny and boring movie was Son of The Mask. The movie lacks a baseline and the characters acting was simply in character, which is the exact opposite of what you would expect from a person wearing a mask that make them act out of character.

Cat Woman starring Halle Berry is another movie that was out of plot. The acting, the dialog and almost everything in the movie was done sloppily. Other comic book movies that were not depicted the way they should have include Howard the duck, Batman and Robin, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze and Whiteout. While this listing will likely get some criticism from some, it is very close to what most people would agree on.

the comic book movies

10 Great Comic Book Movies

Superheroes can be difficult to film. The colorful costumes that make for striking images in comic books can look absurd when translated into live action. Consider, for example, the silly costume of Adam West from the Batman television show. However, there have still been a number of very successful superhero films. In this article, I will discuss ten of the greatest superhero movies ever made. The films are in alphabetical order. When a film is a part of a franchise, I will only discuss the best member of that franchise.

Batman (1989): While flawed, the first of the Batman series of films is still a classic. Between Tim Burton's Art Deco design and Jack Nicholson's creepy performance as the Joker, the highly-successful Batman film brought out the bizarreness of Batman's insane rogue gallery.

Blade (1998): On top of being a great comic book film, Blade is one of the classic vampire films. It combines the "cool" vampires with tremendous action. Wesley Snipes does a fantastic job of portraying a vampire "hero," who is a couple of cards short of a full deck.

The Dark Knight (2008): The Dark Knight is perhaps the greatest comic book movie ever made. It is dark, tension-filled and action packed. It is made a true classic by the brilliant performance of the recently deceased Heath Ledger, who gives us a far less manic version than the Jack Nicholson version of the Joker.

Dick Tracy (1990): Dick Tracy was not a commercial success, but it was nonetheless one of the most interesting comic book movies ever made. It made the wise decision to be faithful to the appearance of the original comic book characters, and somehow did so without becoming cheesy.

The Incredibles (2004): While not strictly-speaking a comic book movie (there was no Incredibles comic book), the movie was a parody of other comic book movies. It brings out some of the innocence of the Silver Age of comics, while providing a high-quality family movie at the same time.

Iron Man (2008): In 2008, Marvel finally licenced an Iron Man film, and the film was made incredibly entertaining by Robert Downey Jr.'s inspired performance as the amoral Tony Stark. It brought out all the elements that made the Iron Man comics so entertaining, from the ambiguous lead character to the fascination with (impossible) gadgets.

Spider-Man (2002): There were three Spider-Man films, but the original remains the best. It did a very good job of making an exciting "super hero movie" with all the usual notes: there is an origin story, the hero's largest villain and main love interest. The film blended some elements of Brian Michael Bendis' "Ultimate Spider-Man" comic books to keep it fresh.

Superman (1978): This was the first superhero movie to try to follow in the steps of Star Wars and become a blockbuster. The film is wonderful, largely because of the performance of Christopher Reeve, who manages to strike the right balance between Superman and Clark Kent.

The Watchmen (2009): The Watchmen comic was largely considered to be unfilmable, but Zack Snyder proved everyone wrong. He managed to capture the feeling of the comic book, largely by actually using the Watchmen comic for story boarding. The movie is incredibly acrophobia-inducing as a result, so be warned.

X2: X-Men United (2003): The entire trilogy of X-Men films is very well done, but the second film really stands out. In this film, we see the X-Men at the center of a battle between those who hate mutants and those who want them to rule the planet. It introduces a number of components of the X-Men mythos, such as Weapon X and the death of an important character.

Comic book movies definitely fall into the gene of love them or hate them movies. The term "Comic Book Movies" conjures up images of Batman, Spiderman, Superman and more recently the X Men, typical super heroes that we have grown up with. Although some of the best Comic Book Movies aren't about Superheroes, and you probably didn't know they originated from comic books. Films that fall in to this category are Men in Black, Constantine, Blade and more recently Sin City and 300. On the flip side not all Superheroes come from Comic Books. You can see from the chart on the left which was taken a recent show on Sky, the chart is the top 20 rated Superheroes, that some of these heroes definitely didn't originate in comic books. In some cases the heroes are so popular that comic books have been made since about them. These don't count for the purpose of this web site. It is pretty hard to make a good Comic Book Movie. In most cases the comic that is being transformed has already got a good following, otherwise it is not worth making the film. So the writer/director has the tough job of making sure that storyline is consistent to the comic. Then you have special effects to take in to account, especially with the Superhero movies, these need to do the superhero justice and not be to fake. A bad example was in the recent Hulk movie, where the use of too much CGI ruined the film; it is easier to make a bad film than a good film. Back in the 90's a film was made about the Fantastic Four, this film was so bad apparently that it never made it to the cinema or DVD. A few years ago there was another attempt to make the Fantastic Four, this time it made it to the cinema, although not a great movie it gained a big enough cult following for the film company to make a sequel that came out this year. It is rumored that the following comic book movies will be made over the next few years: Batman-The Dark Knight, Superman 6, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, Punisher 2, Hulk 2, Sin City 2 & 3, Spiderman 4, Ant Man, Black Widow, Captain America, Constantine 2, Magneto, Namor-Sub Mariner, NIck Fury, Thor, Wolverine and the Watchmen.

<img
